KOLKATA: Union home minister Amit Shah ruled out at a Bengal BJP meeting on Friday the possibility of President’s Rule in the state as it would be improper to dismiss an elected government backed by a huge mandate. He asked the party’s Bengal unit not to get disheartened, but fight it out politically instead. His remarks followed a BJP lawyers’ team recently meeting the President and requesting central rule in the state, alleging collapsing law and order. They cited political killings, gang rapes and other forms of violence to substantiate the demand.
Shah also asked the state BJP not to bank on CBI investigation to corner Trinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee. He said CBI was doing its job, but Bengal BJP functionaries and elected representatives should fight Trinamool at the political level.
Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday asked the Bengal BJP to take the political battle against Trinamool Congress seriously. “Nobody from outside can carry out the fight. You need to fight your own battle,” he said, recalling the tough days when BJP was in the opposition in Gujarat. He also gave the Bengal unit a run down for the lack of campaigns to highlight central projects in Bengal and the Centre’s delivery of goods to people.
He advised party officebearers to think positively about how BJP took its tally from 3 to 77 in the 2021 Bengal assembly polls. He reprised what he said after addressing aparty rally in New Jalpaiguri on Thursday that there was no reason to feel disheartened about BJP’s future in Bengal.
The Bengal BJP had commissioned a survey in all 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state to identify people’s issues so that it could finetune its slogans and demands constituency-wise and build ground-level movements in the run-up to 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Before the survey, state BJP members, including MPs and MLAs, would reach out to party workers and grassroots supporters to get feedback on the issues the party needed to take up.
