PUNE: In the wake of the Centre issuing a note of caution to five states seeing a high Covid caseload, the additional director general of ICMR Samiran Panda on Saturday highlighted that careful vigil needs to be maintained at the district level. He reiterated these surges shouldn’t be projected as statewide phenomena. On the possibility of a fourth wave, he said panic won’t serve as a pandemic response and as yet, the reported number of Covid cases in the country don’t indicate such an occurrence. “Fourth wave not yet seen on the horizon,” he said.
Panda said a few districts in five states are witnessing a surge. He said it doesn’t mean these states in their entirety are facing a surge and called for closer analysis by the local administration.
Epidemiologist Dr Chandrakant Lahariya told TOI that even as some states are seeing a slight surge, there is no reason to think it’s the start of a likely fourth wave.
