Treated like a ‘grandson’ by Omar Bongo Ondimba, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema was primed to overthrow President Ali Ben Bongo, his mentor’s son.

He stood alone against history – facing the body of the man he had considered his grandfather on 16 September in Franceville. At the end of a long red carpet rolled out for the occasion, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, in Republican Guard uniform, walked towards the marble mausoleum containing Omar Bongo Ondimba’s body.
