More than 8 crore taxpayers filed income tax returns in assessment year 2023-24, new record created

Income Tax Return: A record number of more than 8 crore income tax returns have been filed for the financial year 2022-23 and assessment year 2023-24. The Income Tax Department has shared this information on the social media platform X (Twitter). The Income Tax Department said that this is the first time when more than 8 crore income tax returns have been filed in a single assessment year in the country.

Big achievement of Income Tax Department

Income Tax Department said that this is a big achievement of the department. Till date, more than 8 crore income tax returns have been filed for the assessment year 2023-24. The Income Tax Department said that this is the first time that the department has achieved this milestone. A total of 7,51,60,817 taxpayers had filed income tax returns in the assessment year 2022-23. The Income Tax Department has thanked all the taxpayers and tax professionals for their help in crossing the figure of 8 crore ITRs and achieving this feat.

More than Rs 10 crore paid income tax

During the winter session of Parliament, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha that the number of people paying tax has crossed 10 crore. A total of 10.09 PAN card holders have paid income tax in the financial year 2022-23. However, for the assessment year 2023-24, till December 2, 2023, a total of 7.76 crore taxpayers had filed income tax returns, which has now crossed 8 crore. The last date for filing income tax returns for assessment year 2023-24 is December 31, 2023. In response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the government said that the number of taxpayers in the country was 8,45,21,487 in the assessment year 2018-19, which increased to 8,98,27,420 in 2019-20, and decreased to 8,222 in the assessment year 2020-21. ,83,407, which has increased to 8,70,11,926 in assessment year 2021-22 and 9,37,76,869 in assessment year 2022-23. Whereas in the financial year 2022-23, 10.09 crore taxpayers have paid tax to the government.
