Amidst cheers from fans, Rishabh Pant, the prominent wicketkeeper-batsman of Team India, marked his comeback to batting during a practice match at JSW Vijaynagar, after recovering from a serious car accident that had sidelined him since December 2022. A video shared by a fan on social media captured glimpses of Pant’s batting practice, revealing his characteristic style and finesse.
Rishabh Pant had been undergoing his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. As per the most recent official announcement by the BCCI on July 21, he had not only resumed his batting but also his wicketkeeping activities. Nevertheless, the video shared on social media showcasing Pant’s return to the cricket field marks the first public glimpse of his comeback.
A significant crowd gathered as Pant took his position to bat, and his appearance at the crease was met with enthusiastic cheers. At one instance, Pant confidently executed a lofted shot towards the long-off area, eliciting an exuberant response from the surrounding fans.
Earlier this year, Pant underwent ligament surgery as a result of sustaining various injuries in a car accident. The BCCI’s update on Pant indicated that he is presently adhering to a tailored fitness regimen, encompassing elements such as strength training, flexibility exercises, and running.
The void left by Pant’s absence, a pivotal figure in all formats of the Indian team, had a profound impact on the team’s dynamics, especially in Test cricket. His unfortunate sidelining due to the car accident led to the selectors initially replacing him with KS Bharat, followed by Ishan Kishan. Pant’s absence was acutely felt during the recent World Test Championship final, where India’s aspirations to break a 10-year ICC title drought stumbled against Australia.
As the cricketing world shifts focus to the One Day International (ODI) format, with the World Cup slated for October-November this year, KL Rahul is anticipated to assume the role of the primary wicketkeeper-batsman. While Rahul’s skills and experience offer a reassuring presence in Pant’s stead, the inclusion of Ishan Kishan as the backup keeper emphasizes the team’s depth in wicketkeeping options.
