Sri Lanka President Meets Indian Foreign Secretary

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s first official visit to India, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra met him on Tuesday during his two-day official visit to Colombo.

The meeting, which took place at the Defense Ministry premises, was focused on enhancing bilateral ties and working towards future economic and social goals. The President’s Media Division (PMD) said, “During the meeting, President Wickremesinghe briefed the Indian Foreign Secretary on the government’s reform programs to strengthen the country’s economy. He reiterated India’s continued support during the recent economic crisis.” also accepted.”

The PMD said activities to be undertaken during Wickremesinghe’s upcoming official visit to India were also discussed. Kwatra also held discussions with Sagala Ratnayaka, Senior Advisor to the President on National Security and Chief of Presidential Staff. Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay also attended the meeting.

Wickremesinghe is scheduled to visit India for the first time on July 20 after assuming office in 2022. During his visit, the President is expected to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sri Lanka last year went through its worst economic crisis since its independence in 1948 when India provided financial assistance of about $4 billion.
