Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the recent act of burning the Koran in Stockholm, recalling the victory of the Russian army led by Peter the Great over the Swedes during the Northern War, TASS reported.

“In Sweden, they burned the Koran again. Peter the Great was not enough of a lesson for them,” said the head of state. The video recording of Vladimir Putin’s speech was published on his Telegram channel by the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) journalist, author of the “Moscow. Kremlin” program.

During his recent visit to Derbent, Dagestan, Vladimir Putin noted that in Russia one cannot “encroach on the Koran” as it is a criminal offense in the country.

On June 28, Salvan Momika, a 37-year-old immigrant from Iraq, organized an action near the Cathedral Mosque in central Stockholm with the permission of the police: he tore pages from the Koran, wiped his shoes with them, then put bacon in the book and set it on fire . After the action, the police reported him for inciting religious hatred (for holding the action near the mosque) and for violating the ban on lighting fires.
